Resumen
En el siglo y medio que va desde el reinado de Enrique VIII al rey Guillermo, la política religiosa anglosajona se movió entre la intolerancia, la comprensión y la tolerancia; son tres momentos no necesariamente cronológicos, pero que describen una secuencia reiterada en la historia del protestantismo anglicano. No se concedió libertad religiosa, porque la tolerancia no importaba la libertad de religión, y la libertad de conciencia para los disidentes era restringida al ámbito privado. Por eso la Iglesia nacional de los ingleses es otro caso de tolerancia religiosa fundada en la razón de Estado. Como en otros lugares, fue la religión la que acabó más herida en todas estas pendencias, que dejaron un Estado fortalecido, esto es, un gobiernos de hombres y no de Dios, asentado en la soberanía humana antes que en la primacía de las leyes divinas; un gobierno de derechos de los hombres a creer [...].
